What was announced in Delhi the other day was not merely a summit, it was a movement \u2014 with hope, with urgency, and with collective action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was Yamuna Manthan 2025?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On July 11, 2025, at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi, the MAS Council for Water and River<strong> (MCWR)<\/strong> organized <strong>Yamuna Manthan 2025<\/strong> \u2014 a beautiful gathering of scientists, students, policymakers, water experts, and changemakers from across India and the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it had just one goal:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can we bring life back to our Yamuna?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t just an event. It was a shared <strong>moment of reflection<\/strong>, of action, and of dreaming about a cleaner, living river.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why did we need a summit like this?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The answer is simple, and painful.<\/p>\n<p>Our beloved Yamuna \u2014 <strong>sacred<\/strong>, <strong>cultural<\/strong>, <strong>essential<\/strong> \u2014 is dying.<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s what we\u2019re facing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly 80% of the pollution in Yamuna comes from Delhi-NCR<\/li>\n<li>Unchecked construction on floodplains<\/li>\n<li>Industrial and domestic waste is dumped untreated<\/li>\n<li>In many places, the river has turned into a toxic drain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So yes, the summit was necessary. Because if not now, then when?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The reality of Yamuna today<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest \u2014 standing by the river today doesn\u2019t feel peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t hear flowing water; you see sludge.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t smell fresh air; you catch a stench.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, despite all this, there is hope.<\/p>\n<p>This summit reminded us that we still have the power to turn things around \u2014 together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can a summit like this really achieve?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Much, actually. Since change begins where minds come together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yamuna Manthan 2025<\/strong> was never about speeches \u2014 it was all about devotion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What that sparked was:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shared space for the specialists, the youth, NGOs, and the government<\/li>\n<li>International transfer of successful experiences (like the river restoration work in Japan)<\/li>\n<li>Such community-led action campaigns like the Maa Yamuna Swachhta Abhiyan (MYSA)<\/li>\n<li>Participation of schools and students in the conservation of the rivers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A shift in the public discourse \u2014 from blame to ownership<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wisdom from key voices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The summit was graced by some incredible thinkers and doers \u2014 people who\u2019ve spent years working to understand and heal our rivers. Their words reminded us that saving the Yamuna is both a scientific mission and a moral responsibility.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Maneesh Prasad (Founder &amp; Director, MCWR)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cYamuna\u2019s water levels, floodplains, storage, and drainage systems have been impacted for at least the past 150 years. Fragmented flow paths, water diversion channels, and resulting shifts have altered the river\u2019s natural course.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Chandra Bhushan (President &amp; CEO, iFOREST)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWhether we like to hear it or not, we are a self-centred species. We need to find ways that serve our needs while also protecting the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCleaning a river is difficult, but it\u2019s not rocket science.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Shashank Shekhar (Professor, University of Delhi)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cRestoring Yamuna\u2019s natural floodplains is critical. A river cannot survive if its physical space is destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sanjeev Roy (Founder, MCWR)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe want to gather ideas and act as a platform \u2014 a network that empowers those who want to contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Anshuman (Director, TERI)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWithout restoring Yamuna\u2019s natural flow and making deep institutional changes, river rejuvenation will stay a distant dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Akito Takahashi (Senior Representative, JICA India)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cJapan revived its rivers through science and collaboration. We\u2019re proud to partner with India to do the same for Yamuna.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Balakrishna Pisupati (Head, UNEP India)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe need to combine traditional knowledge with modern science. Both are essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Murari Lal Gaur (Vice Chancellor, Dr. C.V. Raman University)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cEducational institutions must shape not just scholars, but eco-conscious citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>T.B.N. Singh (Regional Director, Central Ground Water Board)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cRecharging groundwater isn\u2019t optional anymore \u2014 it\u2019s critical for Yamuna\u2019s survival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A play that touched every heart<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most emotional moments of the day was a street play performed by Delhi University students titled:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Hamari Yamuna<\/strong>, <strong>Hum Bachayein<\/strong>\u201d (Our Yamuna, Let\u2019s Save Her)<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t just a performance \u2014 it was a wake-up call.<\/p>\n<p>The students showed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The everyday damage we do to the river<\/li>\n<li>The disconnect between what we worship and how we treat it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The power we hold \u2014 when we act together<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Grateful Commitment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At Groweon, taking part in the Yamuna Manthan 2025 was more than attendance \u2014 it was coordination.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve never believed sustainability is a department \u2014 it&#8217;s an ethos.<\/p>\n<p>It rests on three pillars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\ud83c\udf31 Community action<\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udf0a Science-backed solutions<\/li>\n<li>\ud83e\udd1d Long-term ecological responsibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This summit reaffirmed our resolve for clean rivers, responsible living, and a truly sustainable India.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s not wait for more summits.
